First United Church of East Syracuse

At the First United Church of East Syracuse, we have so many people who work “behind the scenes” to help ensure that things proceed as they should – from maintaining the actual structure, to creating opportunities for us to give to the community around us, to cleaning the sanctuary, filling the candles, etc.

Worship and Music

The Worship Committee, in collaboration with the pastor and organist/choir director, is responsible for planning and implementing worship services. This includes decoration and upkeep of the sanctuary; communion and baptism setup/cleanup; acolyte and usher coordination; and is the primary group to work with the organist/choir director and choir for musical presentations.

Christian Education

The Christian Education Committee is responsible for providing a regular Sunday educational program for all ages, and is responsible to provide such special programs and events as are appropriate to encourage the growth in faith and discipleship of church members.

Youth Christian Education - Sunday mornings during 9:30 a.m. worship service. Children remain in worship for the Children's Sermon and are excused for Christian Education immediately following.

Adult Christian Education - Sunday mornings after worship in the lounge.

(Faith in Action)

The Mission Committee develops opportunities for members to live out their discipleship in service to the larger community. It also provides education to the congregation on the mission activities and opportunities of the denominations. The congregation's participation in the CROP Walk, Habitat for Humanity, Worship at The Crossings Adult Home, Thanksgiving and Christmas gift baskets, and One Great Hour of Sharing are examples of participation in mission opportunities.

Ongoing Missions Projects:
Camping Ministries
East Syracuse Elementary School Clothing Drive
Food for Peace
Holiday Baskets
One Great Hour of Sharing
Meals on Wheels
Nutritional Counseling
Operation Christmas Child
Prayer Shawl Ministry
Service at the Crossings

The Evangelism Committee informs the community of the Good News of the Gospel as lived out by this particular congregation. They seek out those who might be interested in attending worship; follow up those who visit; encourage potential membership and guide them through the New Member's Class; follow up new members for up to one (1) year following their membership. In addition, they develop programs to train others within the congregation to participate in ongoing evangelism.

Staff- Parish Relations Committee

The SPRC serves as: (1) a support for the communication link between the pastor and the congregation, assuring that good communication takes place and when necessary, mediating during times of difficulty; (2) a support to the pastor and the pastor's family; (3) a support to the pastor in the coordination and implementation of an ongoing congregational care network; (4) the personnel committee for the church.

Buildings and Grounds

The Building and Grounds Committee is responsible for the care and upkeep of the church property and grounds. The committee provides light repairs as needed, develops a list of available professionals to handle any emergencies as may arise, and plans regular maintenance and upkeep of the church property. In addition, supervises the cleaning of the building and coordinates special cleaning and painting work parties.

Finance and Stewardship

The Finance Committee works in conjunction with the Treasurer and Assistant Treasurer to oversee the financial operations of the church, including the collecting and recording of receipts and pledges, the timely payment of bills, and the regular reporting of financial matters to the Parish Council. In addition, the committee ensures adequate insurance coverage for the building, staff, and church sponsored programs.

The Stewardship sub-committee of the Finance Committee develops such programs and activities as to inform the congregation of their opportunities to share their time, talents, and treasures. In addition, it coordinates an annual stewardship campaign in the Fall and works with the Assistant Treasurer to maintain current records of pledging members.

The Memorials Committee receives, holds and manages all memorial gifts and bequests. The committee acknowledges memorial gifts to appropriate individuals, maintains the Memorial Plaques and Book, and recommends to the Parish Council disbursement of funds.

Publications and Communications

The Publications and Communications Committee provides for regular and effective communications to the congregation on the work of the Parish Council and various programs of the church. A monthly newsletter, CONTACT, is mailed to the members and friends of the church. It also provides publicity for the programs of the church to the larger community.

Care Team

The Membership Committee keeps careful records of church membership and participation, including worship attendance and follow up on members whose worship attendance has become infrequent. The committee keeps the pastor and Parish Council informed as to membership needs, and it makes recommendations to the Parish Council regarding changes to the membership rolls.

The Congregational Care Team helps support the pastor in visitation, prayer, and reading out to our members.

Nominating Committee

The Nominating Committee has the responsibility of ensuring that various positions throughout the church are filled with nominees in time for the annual meeting (and elections) in January.

Helping Hands

The Helping Hands Group maintains our "Walk of Remembrance" memorial garden. We order and install the engraved bricks in memory and honor of friends and relatives of the members of our congregation.

The Philathea group is the receiver of the prayer requests placed in the offering plates each week. The prayer list is longer than we would like it, but we are believers in the power of prayer and are faithful to the prayer requests.
